There’s always a lot of anticipation and excitement in the lead up to your school formal. But you can take the excitement to a whole new level by adding a theme. Masquerade themed school formals are popular because of their flexibility, elegance and touch of mystery.

Go back in time masquerade
The first masquerade balls date back to the beginning of the Renaissance period in Venice, Italy. Use this as the inspiration for the décor at your school formal. Include flickering candles and candelabras as table centrepieces or make an entrance through a floral topiary trimmed with fairy lights.

For entertainment, you could consider including a group dance lesson on how to waltz. You might even play a little classical music at the beginning of the formal to set the historical scene.

What to wear: Renaissance masks are elegant and often include gold or silver trims. Some styles of Renaissance mask are mounted to handles and simply held to the face rather than worn.

Make it a Rio Carnival!
The world’s largest masquerade party happens every February in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Take inspiration from this vibrant event by decorating the room with lots of bright colours such as purples, bright pinks, golds and greens.

Scatter glitter or sequins on the tables and consider playing salsa music on arrival to set the Carnival mood. For extra fun, hold a group salsa lesson to get your classmates on the dancefloor

What to wear: Carnival masks are always colourful and often include feathers. Popular masks depict birds, native head dresses and mythical creatures.

Hold a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras
A Mardi Gras masquerade formal maintains the colour and vitality of a Rio Carnival theme but is traditionally more relaxed than other types of masquerade parties. It also gives you the flexibility to ask attendees to wear costumes rather than formalwear.

To create a festive mood, decorate the room with hanging masks, large artificial blooms trimmed with glitter and giant strings of beads. Play lots of jazz music throughout the evening to add a New Orleans vibe.

What to wear: When it comes to a New Orleans Mardi Gras mask, think lots of bling, glitter, sparkles and beads. Nothing is too flamboyant or bright for this colourful masquerade theme.

Easter weddings are an ideal time for couples looking for something different. Easter also provides an inspirational array of colour and theming ideas to make your wedding different.

Be inspired by nature

Choose your wedding colour palette using the beautiful autumnal tones of deciduous trees. When worn by your bridesmaids, these colours provide a dramatic contrast to your white wedding dress and your groom’s black suit.

Gold, red, crimson and orange coloured leaves are in abundance and make a fabulous backdrop for your wedding day photos.

At the reception, use these colours again for table decorations and centrepieces. For a sophisticated, elegant feel to your wedding, consider including luxurious metallic tones in bronze or gold.

Be quirky and fun

Some couples don’t want a traditional wedding setting. Instead they opt for unusual, cute or humorous wedding themes. An Easter wedding has a lot to offer these couples.  By including a bunny motif on invitations, your wedding cake and table décor you can tick all of these boxes.

If you are not a fan of rabbits, consider using chicks or brightly coloured Easter eggs as the theme for your wedding.

Chocolate indulgences

Using Easter eggs as part of your table centrepieces will provide your guests with delicious treats to enjoy throughout the reception. They can also be incorporated into your bonbonniere.

For something different at a garden wedding, place small Easter eggs on each seat for your guests to snack on before the ceremony begins. Alternatively, add fun and entertainment between the ceremony and reception by delighting your guests with an Easter egg hunt.

Of course having chocolate desserts and wedding cake is an obvious inclusion for an Easter wedding.

Fabulous weather

Autumn in Australia is a beautiful time of year. The days are usually warm and sunny while the evening air is crisp and clear. An Easter wedding takes advantage of the great weather you can usually expect at this time of year.
